Team Forming
Dhiman (2014) defines a team as.
“A team is any group of people organized to work together interdependently and cooperatively to meet a purpose or a goal”
In order to continue developing Red Chandelier I will need to form a new team. The first team have all moved on or left the university after the end of the 3rd and last year in the undergraduate course. The aim is to build a new team from the other masters students.
Specific goal
To build a new team.
Measurable targets
I have a set number of roles that I need to fill, they are: one designer, two artists, 2 programmers. So, I have five targets to fill.
Attainable can I do it
If I stick to my set goals, then yes. (Hopefully!!!)
Relevant
Yes, as without achieving this goal, Red Chandelier will be unable to continue development.
Time for Goal
Ideally the earlier the better however I have set a arbitrary time goal for the 31st of October.
Team Development
As with almost all teams I expect to go through the five stages of team development that were first observed by Tuckman (1965) (Performing was added in a later revised edition (1977)). They being Forming (the building of a new team), Storming (where there will be conflict as the team gets to know one and another), Norming (the formation of working relationships allowing progress on the teams objectives), Performing (the team has synched and all are working effectively), and finally Transforming (the team have finished their goals and some may move on to new projects).
Having learned from experience not to invite anyone into a team just because you need what they happen to specialize in. As Fapohunda (2013) states new team members can send a team back to an earlier stage. i.e., moving back form Norming to Storming. (Although currently this will not be a issue) It is also important to consider the persons skill set and there overall suitability to the project as a hole. To ensure I have what I believe are the best people for the roles available I will be following these points.
- Asking all interested students to send me their portfolios.
- Any who portfolios impress me have an informal chat.
- Invite them to join the Team.
Progress
Currently as of 18/10/2022 there have been two students that have sent me over their portfolios. One of them has a very good portfolio showing off their artwork and explaining their journey for each piece, the other is a very basic one with little to no real information.
Apron reflection I believe the reason why I have had little response is that there is some miss understanding as to what launchpad is, as well as some confusion as to what I want (based on the feedback from the pitch). However, I am talking to students individually in an attempt to get more interest and to clear up any confusion.
As with most things if there is uncertainty at the start it only gets bigger over time, so it is virtually important that you get it right the first time.
As Reel (1999) observes.
“The first objective in getting a project off to a good start is to get everyone on the same wavelength.”
